South Dakota is the last stop in our spring snow goose season. We concentrate our efforts in the eastern Prairie Pothole Region of South Dakota. With large corn and beans fields, along with pastures and countless water sources, this area is a waterfowlers dream. A lot of the snow geese tend to slow down a bit and put on the feed bags when they get to this area of the midwest.

We offer a combination waterfowl/upland hunt. It is very difficult for a non-resident to get a duck license in South Dakato so our waterfowl is limited to Canada Geese. Waterfowl hunters head out to the field in early morning where we hunt out of pits and over decoys. When the morning is over we'll head back to the lodge for a great lunch and then spend the afternoon upland hunting.

Each year hundreds of thousands of Canada Geese stop at the adjacent refuge on their migration south. These geese leave the refuge on the river and cross the bluffs to feed in our fields, providing the opportunity for impeccable field shooting over decoys. With proper winds and weather, our pass shooting conditions are unmatched. Although Canada Geese are the primary species, large flights of Northern Mallards; White-front, Snow, and Blue Geese can also be spotted.

We are fortunate to be located in a major waterfowl staging area in the Central Flyway. Each year around a half million geese stop here on their migration south. Canada geese are the primary species but at certain times you will encounter large flocks of white fronts, snow and blue geese along with mallard ducks.

We have a very heavy concentration Mallard ducks and Canadian geese that fill the sloughs in the north portion of the ranch. You will hunt from stationary blinds near sloughs and potholes or blinds set up between sloughs and potholes for pass-shooting of waterfowl moving back and forth between sloughs, feeding areas and water. We consider the Prairie Chicken a "trophy" bird. It can be hunted in only three states, so when you bag a "chicken," you become one of the few to do so in modern times. Sharptail Grouse, Hungarian Partridge, Bobwhite Quail, Mourning Dove, and Merriam Wild Turkey round out the upland birds available to our guests. The geese make their way through the James (Jim) River Valley usually in February, March, April, and May. We hunt them by decoying them into grain fields, jumpshooting them off of water or fields, and pass shooting them between fields. The legal use of electronic calls is a great asset to the spring season. The most exciting shoots take place over decoys but I try not to limit myself by committing to one specific method of hunting.

When the geese decide to migrate out of Missouri up to South Dakota so do we. We travel to where the birds are but our base camp is usually the Huron or De Smet area. Our South Dakota hunts take place from March 21st until around April 10th. On average South Dakota is usually a little on the wet side so be prepared to hunt in some mud! We hunt the Missouri River flyway as well as a lot of local ducks and geese making South Dakota their home. In the spring snow geese are another option. We mainly field hunt out of laydown blinds or out of a pit. We can also hunt the open water, of local ponds. Steel shot is mandatory for waterfowl hunting.

Each fall thousands of Greater and Lesser Canada geese, snows, blues, speckle bellies, and Northern mallards travel the Missouri River Flyway through our backyard. Depending on the flight pattern, we will call them into decoys or “shoot the pass” on the Missouri River bluffs.

Upwards of some 650,000 ducks and geese spend several months of the fall in the 30-mile radius of Pierre during the peak of the migration.
